Background

The UAE launched its Golden Visa in 2019 and significantly expanded it in 2022 to retain investors, founders and talent for the long term, instead of the usual short, employer-tied visas.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become major hubs for wealthy families and family offices from Europe, Asia and the post-Soviet space.

Problem

The classic problem of mobile capital: where to secure a long-term, non-employer-tied residence and, at the same time, a predictable tax regime for personal income and investments.

The UAE answers with a 10-year visa plus the absence of personal income tax — but the personal level must be carefully separated from the corporate one.

Solution

The Golden Visa grants a renewable 5- or 10-year residence for investors, founders, professionals and select talent categories. Property investors qualify from AED 2 million (about US$545k); a mortgage is allowed if the equity in the property reaches the threshold.

At the individual level the UAE levies no income tax, no capital-gains tax on personal investments and no wealth tax. Since June 2023 a 9% federal corporate tax applies — but only to business profits above AED 375,000; salaries and personal investment returns are outside it.

The visa is not tied to an employer, covers family members, and does not impose presence rules as strictly as classic immigration programs.

Result

A renewable 10-year residence and 0% personal income tax — from a property investment of AED 2 million (about US$545k); a 9% corporate tax applies separately, at the business level.

Lessons learned

  1. A long-term, non-employer-tied residence is valuable in itself — it removes the risk of losing status when you change jobs.
  2. No personal tax does not cancel corporate tax: the business structure must be planned around the 9% rate.
  3. The property threshold is measured by equity in the asset, not by a purchase price inflated with mortgage debt.

Frequently asked questions

Does the UAE really have no taxes at all?

No. At the individual level there is no income tax, no capital-gains tax on personal investments and no wealth tax. But since June 2023 a 9% corporate tax applies to business profits above AED 375,000, alongside a 5% VAT.

Does the Golden Visa lead to UAE citizenship?

No. It is a long-term residence, not a path to citizenship. Naturalisation in the UAE remains exceptional and discretionary, and is not an automatic consequence of holding a Golden Visa.
